Literacy, Numeracy Support

Is literacy a problem

A large proportion of the New Zealand adult workforce has some degree of difficulty with reading, writing and numeracy. Some research puts this as high as 43%.

Changing technology, globalisation, and an increasing focus on quality are all contributing to the demand for a more literate and numerate workforce.

Is literacy an issue at your workplace Probably, but this will be more or less obvious in different worksites. Some employees will tell you quite clearly that they have problems, others will not.

While many people with poor literacy and numeracy skills appear to manage very well, never underestimate the impact this has on a person’s life both at work and at home.

What can you do? Discuss this with your employees but do this discretely and in private. Before you raise the subject, make sure you have something constructive to offer. A promise to find some help for them may be enough.
