FITEC are one of New Zealand's largest industry training organisations. We work closely with the government and forest industries groups to put together a set of national qualifications that will be recognised not only in New Zealand but around the world. We don't actually do any teaching, our job is organising and helping you to get the training you need.

Future potential

In the forest industries sector, New Zealand is a world leader in technology and practice. Although we'll always export some of our forest production as raw logs, the forest industries are gradually adding value to their products.

Using our superior research, technological development and design capabilities, our forest industries are aiming to export more and more finished products.

And as the world becomes more conscious of using only renewable resources, the fact that our forest industries are based on a sustainable, plantation forest resource will continue to win us global approval.

(2025 MILESTONES)


  • The New Zealand forest industries sector will account for over 14% of GDP (gross domestic product).
  • It will be the country's largest export earner with international sales in excess of $14 billion.
  • More than 60,000 people will be directly employed by the forest industries, and more than 250,000 employed indirectly.
  • The sector is based on a sustainable, managed, planted production forest resource of 3.5 - 4.0 million hectares.
  • The total wood harvest is expected to double to more than 40 million m3.
