Recognising your skills

RECOGNITION OF CURRENT COMPETENCY (RCC)

If you've worked in the forest industries sector and already have the skills and knowledge that a particular unit standards requires, you deserve to have your achievements officially recognised.

You can have your knowledge and skills assessed under Recognition of Current Competency, or RCC.

RCC formally recognises skills and knowledge that match what is specified in unit standards. You should seek assessment by RCC only when you are completely confident you will qualify.

HOW TO APPLY FOR RCC

1. If your RCC is towards a national qualification, talk to your employer about entering into a Training Agreement.
2. Decide which unit standards you want to achieve through RCC.
3. Compare the unit standards requirements with your skills, qualifications and experience.
4. Compile evidence of your knowledge, skills and experience relating to the unit standards which you want to have assessed for RCC.
Acceptable evidence includes:

  • Testimonials from previous employers and workmates that list:

    • length of service
    • range of tasks carried out routinely
    • type of equipment used
    • work history directly related to the unit standards identified.

  • Testimonials by current employer / supervisor
  • Records of practical work that relate to the unit standards
  • Certificates and course reports
  • Witness testimony and references from other people in your workplace.
5. Arrange to be assessed by a Registered Assessor, who may be a member of your company or an independent Assessor arranged through FITEC.
Discuss with the Assessor whether:

  • Further evidence is needed to meet the requirements of the unit standards
  • How this evidence will be gathered. This may include some direct observation by the Assessor.
6. Complete any further evidence-gathering and finish the assessment process.
7. Pay the costs of the assessment, less any subsidy that may be approved through your Training Agreement with FITEC, and any fees required to have your credits registered in the National Qualifications Framework.

RIGHT OF APPEAL

As with any assessment process, you can appeal the decision. There is a standard appeal procedure.
